Course Overview
Standing orders support safe, efficient care in general practice by enabling authorised health professionals to administer or supply certain medicines under a prescriber’s authority. When used well, they improve access, streamline care, and reduce pressure on prescribers while maintaining safety and legal compliance.
This course provides a practical introduction to using standing orders in general practice and community care settings. Designed for extended care team members, it builds understanding of legal requirements, roles and responsibilities, and best-practice implementation aligned with national guidelines. The course supports consistent, safe use of standing orders to enhance workforce capability and deliver equitable care for whānau.
On completion, participants will be able to:
Understand the purpose, scope, and legal requirements of standing orders in New Zealand Aotearoa
Identify roles and responsibilities when working under standing orders
Apply best-practice approaches to developing, implementing, and monitoring standing orders
Demonstrate compliance with national guidelines, legislation, and Royal NZ College of GPs Foundation Standards
