General practice teams work in busy, fast-paced environments where interruptions, distractions, and public-facing workspaces can increase risk. A team-based approach to cyber security helps reduce vulnerabilities and supports safer care for patients and whānau.
This course is designed for the general practice workforce, particularly:
- Reception and administration teams
- Frontline primary care staff
- Practice managers and team leaders
It is suitable for all staff who use digital systems, communicate with patients, handle health information, or work within shared clinical and administrative environments.
Why this course matters
Cyber security in primary care is about more than technology or IT systems. It is closely connected to:
- Patient privacy and confidentiality
- Patient safety and continuity of care
- Trust in general practice services
- Everyday staff behaviours and clinic processes
About the Course
This course contains two short self-paced learning modules.
Each module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes short interactive knowledge checks throughout to support learning and reflection. There are no formal assessments.
Module 1: Introduction to Cyber Security. This module introduces the foundations of cyber security in general practice including:
- Common cyber risks in healthcare
- How cyber incidents can impact patients and practices
- Personal, emotional, and physical cyber risks
- Practical actions that help reduce cyber risk in everyday practice
Module 2: Recognising Cyber Risks and Protecting Your Practice. This module focuses on recognising phishing attempts, identifying cyber and privacy risks in frontline environments including:
- Common phishing tactics and warning signs
- Safe responses to suspicious emails, links, and requests
- Privacy and cyber risks in reception and shared spaces
- Practical actions that support safer day-to-day practice behaviours
